Fixed vs variable vs tracker energy tariffs

Fixed tariff

With a fixed-priced energy tariff, your unit rates and standing charges stay the same for the length of your tariff, giving you greater certainty over your energy costs.

Variable tariff

With a variable energy tariff, your unit rates and standing charges can go up or down when Ofgem's price cap changes. There is no fixed end date, so you'll remain on the tariff until you choose to.

Tracker tariff

With a tracker tariff, your unit rates and standing charges move up and down with Ofgem's price cap. You'll receive a guaranteed discount on your standing charges for the duration of your tariff, and your tariff has a fixed end date.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on whether you chose to switch to us after, or within your 14-day cooling off period.

  • If you chose to switch after your cooling off period, it should happen within five working days, after your cooling off period ends

  • If you switch within your cooling off period, it should be completed within five working days (before your cooling off period ends)

In both cases, it can take a little longer if any problems arise. For example, if your current supplier objects to the switch. Don’t worry, we'll keep you up to date throughout the process, so you always know what's going on.

Dual fuel means your gas and electricity are both supplied by the same supplier, which is typically cheaper and easier than having them supplied separately. If your gas and electricity are supplied separately, or your home uses only electricity, you will need a gas or electricity single fuel tariff.

Notes

  1. 1

Every three months, in January, April, July and October, the energy price cap can increase or decrease. It’s reviewed and updated by Ofgem. Our Standard (Variable) prices are based on the energy price cap, while our fixed tariff prices remain the same for the duration of the tariff and are not covered by the energy price cap. The price cap limits the maximum amount suppliers can charge for each unit of energy and standing charges, but it does not limit your total bill. The more energy you use, the higher your bill will be.

  2. 2

The Simply Tracker tariff is priced in line with the most recent price cap. The price cap is reviewed and updated by Ofgem every three months, in January, April, July and October. We've reduced the standing charge by applying a daily discount of 6.85p (inc VAT) for both electricity and gas. Over a year, that's £25 off the electricity standing charge and £25 off the gas standing charge. A total of £50. The discounted standing charge applied is the same across all regions and payment methods. Customers on traditional (non-smart) prepayment meters will need to move to smart Pay-As-You-Go to get this tariff. The discounted standing charges apply no matter how much energy you use. To help you choose the best tariff, see our future price cap predictions.

See details showing EDF as Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity.

  4. 4

EDF’s EV tariffs have off-peak rates ranging from 6.18–6.66p/kWh, available for 7 hours between 11 pm and 6 am. Based on a comparison of selected UK EV tariffs available as of 8 September 2026. Off-peak rates and hours vary by supplier.

  5. 5

This tariff is backed yearly by 100% zero carbon nuclear electricity as standard. The UK fuel mix disclosure information published by the government (DESNZ) recognises electricity generated from wind, solar and nuclear produces zero carbon dioxide emissions at the point of generation. The zero carbon electricity purchased is supplied to the National Grid. Customers receive electricity via the National Grid, not directly from zero-carbon generators. View our fuel mix.

  6. 6

Savings based on October 2026 Standard Variable Price Cap and dependent on household consumption patterns. The average saving of more than £800 per year compared to the price cap assumes Ofgem typical consumption, payment by Direct Debit and national average tariff rates.
A typical household (of 2-3 people and with 10-12 panels) on Standard Variable Tariff (2,500 kWh consumption with Standard electricity meter) would pay £858 per year for electricity based on October 2026 energy price cap rates.
A typical household (of 2-3 people and with 10-12 panels) with 2,500 kWh of solar generation and a battery with a capacity of 3kWh will pay £0 over a year, based on Empower Fixed Exclusive 12m & Export Exclusive 12m v3 tariff rates. Assumes that solar generation is prioritised to power the home with excess stored in the battery. Battery discharge is prioritised for use in peak hours. The battery is topped up using imported energy in night/off-peak hours and discharged during the peak. Excess energy not used for the home/ when the battery is full is exported.

  7. 7

This rate applies exclusively to our Export Exclusive 12m v3 export tariff. Rates for other SEG tariffs will vary.
